The paper mache shells represented in this model were made using a 1:50 plaster sectional model of troglodyte settlement found in the city of Matera, Italy.  These paper mache cave shells are held into position using a bespoke frame as pictured in the photo and diagram. This model allows to visualise the negative space present between the caves. This experimental model forms part of initial design thinking exploring how the Materan troglodyte architecture could be experienced differently. It explores how the caves could be experienced out of the ground, and the spatial experience offered by the resultant negative space.
