The following project is a study of Hackspace Hackney, London. Hacksapce is a for non-profit organisation with the aim of offering affordable maker spaces around the UK. The charity runs without paid staff, meaning the success of a Hackspace is dependent on co-working, mutual respect, and a tight community network. This case study was undertaken through interactions with the Hacker community, and extensive research on the spacial characteristics.
A space designed and managed by Hackers.
Hackspace Hackney is a continual work in progress, reimagined and adapted. The Hacker community is trusted to re-design and re-build the space according to need. This approach gives the Hackspace a personal and makeshift style and allows for efficient use of space, the Hacker community knows best about workshop-specific requirements.
A closed loop community becoming the Hackspace's downfall.
Hackspace Hackney shut down a few months after this case study was undertaken, due to a lack of funds. Hacksapce did not allow the facilities to be used for business, and avoided advertising the space to the outer city, creating a closed loop socio-economic system. This case study led to Hacker's Yard - Kings Cross, imagining how a Hacksapce could function if there were no limitations for space and allowing an openness to business.
